Question: Is My Dehumidifier Bag Defective? Why Does the Collected Water “Freeze”?

Sep 15, 2025 | FAQs

Answer:

The “freezing” you observed is actually the formation of calcium chloride hexahydrate crystals (CaCl₂·6H₂O), which indicates normal operation of the dehumidifier. Here’s a detailed explanation:

Why does “freezing” occur?

When anhydrous or dihydrate calcium chloride in dehumidifier bags/boxes absorbs moisture, it first dissolves into a saturated solution that flows into the collection area. If the ambient temperature drops below the solution’s saturation point, the solution becomes supersaturated, causing calcium chloride hexahydrate crystals to form—visually resembling “ice.” Additionally, in low-humidity environments with insufficient moisture absorption, calcium chloride may directly crystallize as hexahydrate.

Does “freezing” affect dehumidifying performance?

No.  Calcium chloride hexahydrate melts at 29.92°C (85.9°F). When temperatures rise or moisture absorption continues (reaching maximum saturation), the crystals will naturally dissolve back into liquid. Therefore, temporary crystallization does not impair the dehumidifying function.

Can “freezing” be prevented?

Crystallization is inherent to all anhydrous/dihydrate calcium chloride dehumidifiers due to the compound’s physical and chemical properties.
While adding anti-caking agents can reduce crystallization, this compromises moisture absorption efficiency. We prioritize the product’s high dehumidifying performance. If crystallization occurs, simply wait for warmer temperatures or higher humidity—the crystals will dissolve naturally.
